This article provides an overview of short- and long-term art therapy treatment approaches used in the United States for military personnel with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries. The clinical approaches described are based on the theoretical foundations and experience of art therapists in providing individualized care to meet the unique needs of the patient population. Art therapy models and guidelines are designed to be more therapist-focused in the short-term model, evolving into an increasingly patient-centered format in the long-term treatment model. The overall objectives of art therapy are : to support identity integration, externalization and authentic self-expression; promote group cohesion; and to process grief, loss, and trauma. In addition, program evaluation is used in both contexts as a means of understanding participants’ experiences and the perceived value of art therapy.
